As a young player Portillo entered the Real Madrid youth structure. He played here for seven years. Throughout this time his scored 150 goals, setting a new record. Finally in 2002 he signed his first professional contract with Real Madrid.

Recently he has played for Gimnastic de Tarragona. He had a great season with the team, scoring eleven goals. Portillo currently plays with Osasuna. His contract was signed in July of 2007.
