Location: Almaty, Kazakhstan
Stadium: Almaty Central Stadium
Founded: 1992
The Kazakhstan National Football Team, after gaining their independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, played their first match against Turkmenistan on June 1, 1992. The team was originally a member of AFC but switched to UEFA in 2002.
Kazakhstan made its debut in World Cup qualifying for France '98 but finished at bottom of the group. The team only narrowly missed out on the second qualifying round for Asia's 2002 World Cup, finishing level on points but behind Iraq in goal differential.
With their goal to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, Kazakhstan continues to expand and grow with their short, but memorable, history.
