Founded: 1881
The Watford Football Club was founded in 1881 under the name Watford Rovers, and became a part of the West Herst Club nine years later. In 1897, they turned professional, and in 1898 their official name was changed to Watford Football Club. Twenty years later, in 1920, they debuted in the English Football League.
Between 1920 and 1969, the club saw many ups and downs – including managerial changes (both good and bad), major player signings, a stadium change (Vicarage Road in 1922), and a Southern League Championship.
In 1970, Watford reached a turning point, making it to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, playing against Chelsea. Three years later, singer Elton John became the team's vice president, and has remained linked to the team ever since. In 1982 Watford was promoted to the First Division, and for the first time ever competed against the best teams in England. In 1984 they improved their results yet again, making it to the FA Cup final, losing to Everton. In 1993, Elton John became president for life. Over the next few years, Watford fought their way back to the Premiership, England's top division.
In 1999, the championship began well, Watford played its first match at Anfield Road, winning against Liverpool. The good fortune did not last, however, and at the end of the season were demoted to the First Division, where they currently compete.
